About the exhibition :

Patriots of the arts from all across North America have come together to help build the public collection at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery by donation.  From the beginning of the Beaverbrook collection modernism and abstraction were important components of the collection. In this selection we focus upon recent donations that enhance two paths: the legacies of assemblage and modernist formalist abstraction. Highlights of works on display are recent additions by: Marcel Duchamp, father of dada and conceptual art and outstanding assemblage sculptures by Americans Robert Rauschenberg and Edward Kienholz. There are numbers of impressive works of Quebec abstraction including: Jacques Hurtubise, Marcel Barbeau, Jean McEwen, and Irene Whittome complemented by impressive larger scale works by Wanda Koop, Robert Scott and Marie Lanoo.
