Today, the Minister of Culture and Communications, Mr. Maka Kotto, and the Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Mr. Pierre Duschesne, unveiled the names of the thirteen recipients of the Prix du Québec in the fields of culture and science. Among the laureates, Marcel Bareau is the recipient of the Paul-Émile Borduas award, Prix du Québec in the field of visual arts, applied arts, architecture and design. The laureates will receive their awards during a formal ceremony taking place at Parliament Building in Québec City on November 12, 2013.
Marcel Barbeau’s nomination for this year’s prestigious award was proposed by Me Marc Bellemare, a knowledgeable art lover, who’s always willing to share his passion, creator and host of the Club des collectionneurs en arts visuels du Québec. Along with Bellemare, other great visual art collectors and lovers joined in to support Marcel Barbeau’s nomination: Pierre Bourgie, collector and patron; Sébastien Hudon, art historian and photographer; Lyne-Sylvie Perron, public relation officer and daughter of his friend Maurice Perron, who was Barbeau’s companion in the Automatiste Group (both were signatories of the “Refus Global” manifest); as well as Michel Martin, art historian and museologist; and Roger Bellemare, contemporary art dealer and lover. Marcel Barbeau is very grateful for their support. He also thanks everyone who, since 1983, have written or countersigned, often several times, letters of presentation or letters of support for the last, and less fruitful, 24 nominations. He is also thankful to this year’s jury who chose him and to the Government of Québec for awarding him its highest distinction in visual arts. Last but not least, he is thankful to Borduas, who opened the path of art and freedom in his life.
The Prix du Québec, is the most prestigious award attributed by the Government of Québec in all fields of culture and science. The year Marcel Barbeau is the winner of the Paul-Émile Borduas Award, the Prix du Québec in visuels arts.

Marcel Barbeau arrived at the ceremony of the Prix du Quebec 2013 in Porsche 911, 1989 which he had conceivedthe design during year 2013 at the request of M. Alain Authier. This original collector, owner of the Porcshe, drove himself the invaluable car. For Barbeau, this arrival in this luxurious ride was an amused allusion to the other automobile, more modest, that he had painted in New York in 1965 (one Beatle Volkswagen paint as an op art masterpiece. It was also a new demonstration of Barbeau’s spirit of freedom and refusal of the conventions.
