“LES ENFANTS DU REFUS GLOBAL” ON TÉLÉ-QUÉBEC
20/05/2002

Les enfants du Refus Global, Manon Barbeau, 1997, 74 min 47 s
On Monday May 20th at 7pm, Télé-Québec will be presenting Manon Barbeau’s movie “Les enfants du refus global”, a production of the National Film Board (NFB). Like the film-maker’s movie “Barbeau libre comme l’art”, this movie has been shown several times on different French Canadian channels as well as on Arte, in Europe. Through a personal lecture, the film-maker, Marcel Barbeau’s daughter, tries to understand this period of extreme rupture in Quebec’s social history, marked in 1948 by the publication of the Automatist movement’s manifest for which Marcel Barbeau was one of the signatories. This movie, although it was released two years earlier, was filmed at the same time as the first images of “Barbeau libre comme l’art”.

From May 1st to June 8th, 2002, The Bernard Gallery in Montreal will be presenting an exhibition of Marcel Barbeau’s more recent paintings under the title “Vertiginous limits”.
The exhibition will include small and medium paintings, produced during the past two years, as well as the collages that inspired them. A few painted steel or stainless steel sculptures as well as a few etchings will complete the exhibition. Barbeau’s last exhibition in a private gallery in Montreal dates back to 1995. With the exception of his works that were displayed at the Côte des Neiges House of Culture during the summer of 2000 and those that were shown in the movie “Barbeau libre comme l’art”, the artist’s production has not been well known to the Montreal public since his relocation to Paris in 1996. It will be a unique opportunity to discover it.
For this exhibition, the choreographer and dancer Jocelyne Montpetit will be presenting a dance performance in relation to the paintings. Marcel Barbeau will make a brief appearance during the performance. This event will take place during the exhibition at the Bernard Gallery on Saturday May 11th, at 2pm.
The Bernard Gallery Inc., is located on 90 Laurier st. West, Montreal, QC, H2T 2N4, Canada.
