From October 26 to January 8, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Montreal exposes the “Combustions originelles No. 28” by Marcel Barbeau as part of an exhibition of drawings and works on paper from the permanent collection. This little color ink enhanced with Chinese ink come from the collection of the famous collector couple Gerard and Gisele Lortie. It has rarely been shown since its acquisition by the museum in the early seventies, due to the fragility of the material and support, and especially their sensitivity to light. For lovers of Barbeau, it is a unique opportunity to examine it in relation to the works of his contemporaries, including Jean-Paul Riopelle and Fernand Leduc. This ink is the first work of Marcel Barbeau purchased by the Lortie, probably on the occasion of his exhibition at the Agnes Lefort Gallery in March 1953.

From 23 October 2005 to 29 January 2006, we can see at the Museum d’art de Joliette a painting by Marcel Barbeau, “Andrée” or “Le jardin de pierres” (Stone Garden), as part of the exhibition “Penser grand” (Think Big). First in a series of two exhibitions by the museum entitle “Question d’échelle” (Question of scale), this series “examines the diverse ways in which artists have tackled the issue … the size of the work … at various times.” The rich collection of the Art Museum of Joliette, which includes numbers of large scale works from different periods of Canadian art and internationanal art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, promotes or suggests such questioning.
